Computer Technology Standards for 6th Grade

I: Computer Literacy

Summary: Computer Literacy includes the ability to appropriately use hardware, software applications, multimedia tools and other electronic technology which results in productivity, communication, research and problem-solving.

Power Standards:

• Students will develop, publish and present information in a format that is appropriate for content and audience. (4B)

• Students will demonstrate an understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software and connectivity. (3A)

• Students will use productivity tools to produce creative works and prepare publications. (3B)

• Students will analyze information relative to the characteristics of technology and apply in a practical setting. (1A)

• Students will analyze the relationships among technologies and explore the connections between technology and other fields of study. (1C)

II: Information Literacy

Summary: Information Literacy is the acquisition, interpretation, and dissemination of information. Technology-based information literacy focuses on effective methods for locating, evaluating, using, and generating information from the Internet and other electronic information.

Power Standards:

• Students will analyze technologically responsible citizenship. (2A)

• Students will evaluate the accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, coverage and relevance of information and data sources. (5A)

• Students will develop search strategies, retrieve information in a variety of formats and evaluate the quality of appropriate use of Internet resources. (5C)

• Students will analyze information relative to the characteristics of technology and apply in a practical setting. (1A)

• Students will analyze the relationships among technologies and explore the connections between technology and other fields of study. (1C)

III. Technological Literacy

Summary: Technological Literacy is the intersection of mathematics, science, and technology. It requires the abilities needed to participate in a technological world. It specifies the unique knowledge, devices, and capabilities used to solve problems.

Power Standards:

• Students will describe how design and invention have influenced technology throughout history. (2C)

• Students will develop an understanding of, and be able to, select and use physical technologies. (7A)

• Students will evaluate the aesthetic and functional components of a design and identify creative influences. (6A)

• Students will understand and apply research, innovation and invention to problem-solving. (6C)

• Students will analyze information relative to the characteristics of technology and apply in a practical setting. (1A)

• Students will analyze the relationships among technologies and explore the connections between technology and other fields of study. (1C)
